This 1983 Matra Murena 2.2 in Rouge Mephisto is one of the finest examples of the model available today. Lovingly maintained and progressively improved by a single owner for 23 years, the car received a complete professional respray in 2024 and a fully reconditioned cylinder head in 2025. The suspension, brakes, exhaust, cooling system and interior have all been comprehensively renewed. Engine, drivetrain & underbody

The 2155 cm³ inline 4-cylinder engine produces 117 HP and is fed by a single two-stage Solex carburetor with a completely renewed fuel system. In 2025, a fully reconditioned cylinder head was installed, proactively addressing a known maintenance point on the Murena 2.2. The 1,000 km break-in service has already been completed, and the engine runs and cools flawlessly. A new cooling radiator and stainless steel cooling pipes complement the freshly rebuilt top end, while the five-speed gearbox shifts smoothly and quietly through all gears.

The suspension and braking system have been comprehensively renewed. New rear suspension arms with wheel bearings have been fitted, all front ball joints have been replaced, and the entire braking system has been renewed. The car holds a valid MOT until August 5, 2027.

The exhaust system consists of a Devil spaghetti manifold paired with a matching four-pipe stainless steel Devil silencer, giving the Murena a characterful and sporting exhaust note without being intrusive.

Exterior & interior

In 2024, the car received a complete professional respray in its original Rouge Mephisto colour. The paintwork remains flawless, while a new windshield and replacement of all exterior rubbers complete the exterior refresh. The car has also been fitted with a Matra Murena 2.2S rear spoiler and side skirts, giving it a sportier and more purposeful appearance while maintaining the character of the original design.

Inside, the interior has been fully renewed in black leather with red stitching. All door seals have been replaced, creating a quiet and well-finished cabin. The iconic three-seat layout remains fully intact, with the quality and attention to detail matching the exterior of the car.

History & condition

This Murena spent 23 years with the same dedicated owner and was stored in a heated garage throughout that entire period. As a result, the chassis and trunk floor are completely free from oxidation — an exceptional condition for a classic of this age. Every improvement made to the car over those years was carried out with Carjoy’s guidance, using quality parts and professional workmanship.

Like every Murena, this example benefits from Matra’s galvanised steel chassis and glass-fibre reinforced polyester body panels. Combined with its long-term heated garage storage, the structural components of this car are in outstanding condition.

The 2.2 litre engine produces 117 HP at 5750 rpm and 163 Nm of torque, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. With a curb weight of around 1000 kg and its mid-engine layout, the Murena offers an engaging and rewarding driving experience.
