The EX Chassis – What Makes This Murena Special
The EX-series chassis number is one of the most interesting details of this Matra Murena 2.2S. EX-numbered Murenas were factory specials produced in very limited numbers and are distinct from the standard production cars. For enthusiasts who know the Murena, this makes the car particularly interesting. Finding an EX-series 2.2S with its history, mechanical preparation and original character intact is a rare opportunity.
Engine & drivetrain – 142 HP with rebuilt engine and gearbox
The original 2155 cm³ engine was completely disassembled and rebuilt to a high standard in 2016. The cylinder head, a known weak point of the Murena 2.2S, was professionally revised and pressure-tested, while all engine seals were replaced. During the rebuild, the engine was fitted with new Wössner pistons, high-quality components specifically suited to the Murena 2.2 models. The gearbox was also rebuilt at the same time.
A new cooling system was installed to provide dependable temperature control, while the original exhaust system remains fitted and is in good condition. Full photographic documentation of the engine rebuild is still available.
Suspension & brakes
The suspension and braking systems have been well maintained throughout the car’s history. In recent years, a new brake booster and master cylinder have been installed, while the brake lines have been replaced with copper lines. All brake cylinders are working correctly.
The suspension components remain in good condition, with rust-free control arms and ball joints that are in good technical condition.
Exterior & interior
The car was resprayed in Colombian Bleu in 2014, giving the Murena its distinctive and unmistakable appearance. The colour suits the 2.2S particularly well and emphasises the original lines of the car.
Inside, the interior has been renewed in black leather with contrasting blue stitching. The combination gives the cabin a sporting but refined character, while retaining the iconic three-seat layout that makes the Murena unlike almost any other classic sports car.
Performance & driving character
The Matra Murena 2.2S is powered by a 2155 cm³ inline 4-cylinder engine producing 142 HP at 6000 rpm and 187.3 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. With a top speed of approximately 225 km/h and 0–100 km/h in around 8.4 seconds, the 2.2S remains a genuinely quick classic.
With a curb weight of around 1000 kg and its mid-engine layout, the Murena offers an engaging and distinctive driving experience. The combination of the 2.2S engine, lightweight construction and rear-wheel drive is what makes the 2.2S the ultimate factory version of the Murena.
Rust-Free Construction – A Structural Advantage
Like all Murenas, this 1984 example benefits from Matra’s galvanised steel chassis and glass-fibre reinforced polyester body panels. The galvanised chassis provides a major structural advantage over many steel-bodied classics of the same era, while the polyester body panels are not susceptible to conventional body rust.
